Hurricane Helene and the Appalachian Trail
Over a third of the Appalachian Trail is closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. My heart goes out to all those affected by this disaster. I am not going to restate what the news is already telling us. Instead, my words will be brief as I refer you to a link by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and one by a fellow A.T. thru-hiker. Please take time to read and watch them. There are links in those posts where you can donate to help these towns and survivors. It is going to be months and maybe even years for the people and the trail to recover and rebuild. I know the importance is for the safety and wellbeing of our fellow citizens, but my heart also bleeds for the destruction of the Appalachian Trail. The A.T. means so much to so many of us in ways that cannot be described. Please, when the time comes to rebuild our trail, reach out to the ATC or one of the 31 volunteer-based trail-maintaining clubs.
Here is a trail update from the ATC posted September 30, 2024. Hurricane Helene’s Impacts on the Appalachian Trail and Nearby Communities
